This review is strictly about the pizza and takeout service. The process of ordering and pickup was easy (which isn't always true, so it's worth mentioning). The pizza itself was different from any others I have had in Portland lately, which is (I assume) why so many people are calling it the BEST pizza around. Different isn't always better. It was fine... good cheese, nice crust, fresher taster sauce than many... but it's not going to be my regular go-to place. The "char" is just a bit too much, the slices were all over the place portion-wise and shape-wise (kids would fight over that if you have a family) and the toppings were more of a decoration than a feature. It's really good, especially if you're looking for a little variety in your pizza life, but I still miss the Joint (IYKYK).
Interesting Italian provisions AND unique ( and tasty) pizzas. The relatively spacious parking lot helps, too!
I love Montes and have been a customer since they opened. Between my husband and I, we have tried multiple pizzas such as the garlic pinsa, cacio e peppe, and one with brussel sprouts and bacon maybe? For sandos we've had the chicken club and Rays Italian, but my all time favorite that I haven't been able to move away from in years is the Montes Italian as a bowl. They use high test greens like rainbow chard (and other greens ) in the bowl and then it's topped with a bunch of sharp provolone, grilled ham (with grill marks!), green peppers and a nice vinegarette dressing. Highly recommend, especially if you want a greens kick. The staff is always lovely and seem happy which makes customers happy. I do recommend calling your order in because they do get busy. Even if you have to wait, there's plenty to look at in the store. Produce is fresh AF, everything you need for a charcuterie board, meats, cheeses, crackers, bread, spreads, you name it. They carry local beer, a ton of wine, local dairy and non dairy ice cream, I could go on and on. Lots of parking, outdoor seating, clean bathroom, food and beverage options galore. You really can't go wrong so what are you waiting for?
Insane cheese pizza, ingredients were top tier. I wish I had a spot like this in Virginia
Fine foods market with quality products (including some Maldon smoked sea salt that I'm addicted to), a bakery featuring breads and treats (including vegan options) and a cafe featuring pizza, sandwiches and salads. They also cater. There is some outdoor seating. Service was friendly. Been there a few times for takeout pizza, which has always been delicious-we usually get the funghi pizza and this last time we got the one with potatoes which was uniquely awesome-mounds of mashed potatoes golden and bubbly with cheese. Their website says to order early to be sure you get the pizza you want. There are some pre made pizzas available if you don't have time to wait.
Monte's Fine Foods in Portland, ME, is a hidden gem for pizza lovers. Their plain pizza features a thin, crispy base with an airy crunch, excellent sauce, and a delicious combo of mozzarella and finely grated parmesan--simple and perfect. The vegan pizza was equally impressive. Monte's used vegan cheese sparingly, avoiding the usual overly gooey texture and treating it as a topping rather than a main component. With great topping coverage, a nice kick of spice, and that same crispy base, it was just as satisfying as the classic. Monte's delivers quality ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and a slice for everyone--classic or vegan. Don't miss out!
What a toy store!! Good Roman-style pizza, and lots of treats in the shop, including legit Italian pasta (bucatini!!) Four stars bc first visit and silly laws mean no beer or wine with the pizza onsite, and it's a bit pricey (for good reason), but it's a winner.
Great gluten free pizza. Flat crispy crust. This place is a nice market that has lots to offer. The pizza and sandwich counter is great. Awesome wine selection. Pizza was slightly pricey, but worth it. One gluten free pizza is huge!
Crisp pizzas with vegan and vegetarian options 5/5 - they have plenty of other options like salads, sandwiches, desert, wines and a grocery section with Italian delicacies
Okay so Portnoy got to us and we had to try out the pizza. What we found inside was that it is super clean, love their branding, TONS of local goods - we'll be back for that. The pizza was yum, with simple ingredients and a fantastic dough that had the perfect amount of chew. I love a bit of char on the crust - definitely not a fan of the square cut - but I'd definitely give it another shot. :) The team was friendly and handled a rowdy group of 8 year-old soccer players with ease which is always nice to see. We'll be back for the local goods and to try out another pie, for sure.
